Join us as we explore Asakusa and learn the history that lurks behind the impressive Sensoji Temple and the areas hustle and bustle.

SensojiOur guide will lead you through the oldest temple complex in Tokyo and explain the surrounding area whose history dates back to the 7th century. Find out how and why this area became Edo’s playground through the Edo period and how its status as fashion and trend setter grew during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods. You will also discover why, after the end of WWII, Japanese mostly stopped coming here.

NakamiseDiscover what Asakusa offered Edoites who found escape from the drudgery of everyday life in Edo under the Tokugawa dictatorship. We explain why Edo’s licensed quarters were situated nearby in Yoshiwara and how Kabuki in Edo, and theatre in Taisho and Showa sprang up here along with exotic foreign foods and drinks.
