EDO CASTLE GUIDED TOUR

Join us for our weekly guided tour of the 400 year-old Edo castle, located in the heart of modern Tokyo. Edo Castle, part of which is the Imperial Palace, was home to the Tokugawa rulers of Japan from 1600 to 1868, when Japan began to open its sealed boarders.

"View of Edo" (Edo zu) pair of six-panel folding screens (17th century).We walk between the towering 400 year-old ramparts of the castle built by Tokugawa Ieyasu and his descendants. We will walk the same paths that daimyo tread, and visit the exact location where the shogun held his monthly audiences; see the location of the famous Matsu-no-roka where the incident that set off the famous forty-seven ronin took place, and the gate from which dead people and criminals were carted out of the castle.

Hyakunin-Bansho in Edo CastleWe will see where the the fifteen Tokugawa shoguns met their personal advisors and carried out their official duties over the course of 268 years as well as the Ooku where only the shogun lived along with his ladies and where no other man was allowed to enter.

We meet at 11.00 every Tuesday and Thursday in front of the Otemon gate to the East Garden of the castle, and finish at approximately 14.00 at the Hirakawamon gate. (If the day before Tuesday or Thursday is a national holiday, the tour will not be held.)
