NIKKO ONE-DAY GUIDED TOUR

Raijin (Thunder God) Statue in Taiyuin Nikko, located in the mountains of Tochigi Prefecture approximately 140km north of Tokyo, is the destination of this all day (seven to eight hours) tour.

After meeting in Tokyo, we head for Nikko to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Toshogu and Taiyuin, the resting place for the defied first Tokugawa shogun, Ieyasu and his grandson Iemitsu.

Our tour begins at the site where Shodo Shonin was presented with a divine sign in 766 that this was the place where the Buddhist mountain temples of Nikko should be founded.

Three wise monkeys (Toshogu) embody the proverbial principle to "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil".From here we walk through Rinnoji, founded by Shodo in 766, and then walk upthe Omotesando to the Toshogu mausoleum completed in 1617.

Your expert guide will explain the history of the Toshogu complex and uncover the extraordinary meanings of the unique structures and their unusual icons that were borrowed from both Shinto and Buddhism.

We then visit the third Tokugawa shogun's resting place at Taiyuin, as well as the Futarasan Shrine, which dates from the year 767.
